The Mask

A time did come, once upon,
She wore a mask, just to move on.
Hiding her tears of despair;
Days went by, but the mask stayed there.

Her mask so perfect,
All smiles, no scars.
To others, so bright, so fair…
And in this self, she went so far,
She forgot the mask was even there.

With the mask though came, a persona of its own...
Of porcelain skin, an aura of stone.
Falling in line, true feelings unknown,
Admired by many and yet so alone.

And finally, one day, when she faced the mirror,
A stranger’s face stared back at her in terror.
In vain she tried, the mask didn’t peel,
Clinging to her skin, with claws of steel.

She and her mask, were now a pair,
Like Yin and Yang, both fighting to be there.
Distant and wary, but still willing to care,
Wading through the ugly masks, people intentionally wear.
